Bringing the marvels of satellite technology and ground station applications to the forefront, Jigme Namgyal Engineering College, in collaboration with the Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) department, recently organized a comprehensive one-day walk hands-on workshop, for schools of the locality in Samdrup Jongkhar.

Aimed at introducing students to the fascinating world of satellite technology and ground station applications, the workshop saw an enthusiastic participation of class 9 and 11 students from Samdrup Jongkhar Higher Secondary School, alongside the college’s own first-year Electronics and Communication Engineering students.

The prestigious event was graced by the esteemed presence of the Dean of Research and Industrial Linkages, Mr. Sangay Chedup, who shared inspiring insights and encouraged the young students to pursue excellence in the field of STEM. The workshop was expertly hosted by the charismatic Ms. Srijana Gajmer, who effortlessly guided the participants through the enriching sessions with her engaging and informative commentary.

The event, facilitated by 2nd-year Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) students, was a resounding success, providing a comprehensive overview of various aspects within the satellite communication domain.

The workshop encompassed an array of intriguing topics, allowing the attendees to gain first-hand knowledge and experience in the field. The itinerary included:

  1. Satellite Introduction: A comprehensive introduction to satellites, shedding light on their significance, functionality, and the pivotal role they play in modern communication and data transmission systems.
  2. PCB Designing and Printing: A session emphasizing the intricacies of designing and printing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), providing the students with valuable insights into the manufacturing process of electronic circuits.
  3. Satellite Tracking from Ground Station: An interactive session on the art of tracking satellites from ground stations, emphasizing the critical role of ground stations in monitoring and collecting data and demonstrating satellite communication.
  4. Demonstration of Satellite Tracking from Ground Station: Participants were enthralled by live demonstrations showcasing satellite tracking from ground stations, providing them with a practical understanding of the process involved in monitoring and controlling satellite movements.
  5. Demonstration of Can Sat and EduSat: Notably, the participants were treated to captivating demonstrations of CanSat and EduSat, two satellite projects ingeniously developed by the enterprising students of the ECE department. These demonstrations showcased the innovative capabilities and potential applications of the projects, sparking inspiration among the attendees.
  6. Demonstration of Home Automation and Basics of IoT: The workshop also included an insightful demonstration of home automation systems and the fundamentals of the Internet of Things (IoT), enlightening the participants about the transformative potential of smart technology in enhancing everyday life.

The workshop concluded on an exhilarating note, with participants receiving well-deserved certificates for their active participation and engagement throughout the day. The event not only succeeded in fostering a deeper understanding of satellite technology and ground station applications but also served as a platform to ignite the passion for innovation and technological exploration among the budding engineers and students.

The success of this workshop stands as a testament to Jigme Namgyal Engineering College’s commitment to nurturing young talents and fostering an environment of innovation and technological excellence, to outreach STEM and emerging technologies to the deepest corners of the country.

The workshops is a spinoff of previous workshops and exhibitions, that were held by the college. Consortiums and workshops as such is part of social responsibility that the college assumes to homogeneously bring emerging technologies and STEM potential, within the reach of preuniversity students, to achieve a dream of STEM advocacy and technological self-sufficiency and awareness.   With the workshop’s impact resonating within the participants, it is evident that this initiative will continue to inspire a generation of forward-thinking individuals, poised to make significant contributions to the field of electronics and communication engineering and beyond.
