A year ago, Jigme Namgyel Engineering College received a European Union Grant (Erasmus+) for a project titled “Promoting Energy Efficient Lighting Education in Nepal and Bhutan (ELNAB)”. As a part of the project, the College in collaboration with the partner university from Finland, Greece, Nepal and France conducted three day training on ‘Course Testing and Teacher Training Programme’ in the campus from 7th till 9th February, 2018.
The main objective of the training is to provide in-depth understanding on the contents covered for the newly developed module ‘Illumination Engineering’ and manifest some of the best teaching methodology for the module. In addition, the participants were also trained on the usage of lighting design software and lighting laboratory equipment.
The Module on illumination engineering is being developed after the awareness raising seminar held by JNEC on 10th March, 2017 and a survey from different target groups such as teachers, students, graduates, stakeholders and consumers. The feedback collected from awareness raising seminar was incorporated to design the survey questionnaires as well from the target audiences.  Similarly, the survey findings are used as the base for designing the illumination modules. The modules will be incorporated for the programme such as Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Bachelor Engineering in Power Engineering.
With the ELNAB project, the college received a fund of around Nu. 3Million for the procurement of the laboratory equipment for the lighting lab and it is already been procured to establish a Lighting Laboratory.  With this laboratory in the college, it will be a research center of excellence on ‘Lighting and Energy Efficiency Studies”.  The College is also working in collaboration with Department of Renewable Energy (DRE) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and tentatively within the month of February, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be signed.
Participants for the training programme were officials from DRE, faculty, staff and students from Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Bachelor Engineering in Power Engineering.
