The first International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1911.  It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements. It first emerge from the activities of labor movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. With the growing movement, strengthened by four global United Nations women’s conferences, has supported in a tribute to build support for women’s rights and participation in the political and economic fields.
International Women’s Day is annually held on 8th of March to celebrate women’s achievement throughout the nations without any division, nationality, cultural, economic or political distinction. The day is also known as the United Nation (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. The theme for this year is “Press for Progress”.
Along with the nations, Jigme Namgyel Engineering College also joined the day in celebrating the “International Women’s Day”. The program was coordinated by the Y-Peer Club to mark its significance. President, Deans, faculty, staff, and students participated in the event.
The program started with a welcome speech by the Club Coordinator followed by a welcome dance. A short clip was also screened to the audience with the message, “If you educate a girl you educate a whole nation.” At the closing of the event the President, Dr. Andu Dukpa also emphasized on the importance of the day and empowered women to move forward in his speech. Further the President passed the message, “Women are at much higher domain in everything they do. Respect Women! Stop discrimination against women and Happy Women’s Day!”
International Women’s Day is not a country, group or organization specific. The day belongs to all the groups collectively everywhere. So together, let’s all be tenacious in accelerating gender parity. Collectively, let’s all Press for Progress make the day YOUR day and do what you can truly make a positive difference for women.
