Department and Programme Overview

The Civil Engineering Department is one of the oldest department instituted since the establishment of the college as Royal Bhutan Polytechnic. With the inception of Diploma level programme in Surveying 2014, the department looks after two programme as Civil Engineering and Surveying Department. Driven by qualified and experienced faculty and staff, the department is responsible for producing potential technical manpower geared towards the country’s socio-economic development since 1974. The department well equipped with all necessary facilities such as laboratories, equipment and machineries to provide knowledge and skills to learners in both theoretical and practical aspects. In recent time, department has seen growing number of faculty undertaking researches to effect the quality of teaching learning process. In long future, department has plan to introduce programmes both at diploma and degree level as per the need in the country.

Diploma in Civil Engineering in the college is two years full time programme which has been the most preferred programme by students across the country with highest intake annually. The programme aims to produce quality and innovative mid-level technical personnel imbued with positive interpersonal skills.  

Curriculum Highlights

The programme is designed to train the best possible Civil Engineering graduates in terms of overall technical competency, by providing an academically rigorous technical foundation in a broad spectrum of Civil Engineering discipline such as surveying, estimation and costing, tendering process, project management and interpretations of various drawings related to Civil Engineering.The curriculum gets thorough review with the support of experts, academician and stakeholders to retain international standard and current as per the need in market.

Practical & Field based Components in the Curriculum

Besides imparting theoretical knowledge, students also undertake various field based assignments as a part of the programme structure which includes:

  • On Job Training [OJT] for 6 weeks of training in the relevant organization across the country.
  • Project work, practical and research based project in the final semester.
  • Industrial tour, field trip, study tour as a exposure for student to realize learning in context

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the Diploma in Civil Engineering programme, the graduates of will be able to:

  • Design, build, supervise, operate, and maintain construction projects and systems in the public and private sector, including roads, buildings, airports, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment.
  • Create, improve and protect the environment.
  • Conduct Basic research and innovation

Department’s forte

The department has been providing quality education driven by holistic values for a better future career. Research activities in various areas such as geotechnical soil characteristics, interlocking of bricks, water treatment and water quality assessment along with innovation to broaden the learning pace in the field of civil engineering. The department also provides professional services such as training, consultancy and expert services to external organizations. Thus, the department is looking forward to build external linkages with organizations and academic institutions within and outside the country to strengthen its capacity in the service of nation.

Career Prospectus:

The Diploma in civil engineering being one of the oldest programme, it never had adverse situation in terms of students’ future career. Graduates from this programme are employed in various government, corporate and private organization across the country. Some graduates also leading the market as an entrepreneur in various sector. The programme gets timely review in order to study the knowledge and skills required by the graduates in the market which assures currency of the programme in line with the demand in various organization.
