Aims of the Programme
The programme is designed to produce technically competent civil engineering graduates through provision of an academically rigorous technical foundation in a broad spectrum of civil engineering disciplines such as building materials and construction, surveying, estimation and costing, tendering process, project management, and interpretations of various drawings related to civil engineering. It also intends to provide students with the knowledge of irrigation, environmental, highway engineering along with several hands-on skills through workshop practice.

In order to keep abreast with technological advancements, students are provided with platforms to showcase their creativity and innovation skills through mini projects, projects and exhibitions. Their skills and subject matters are further leveraged through field trips, site visits and guest lectures. Furthermore, to have greater insights of the real-world work environment students are sent for Industrial Attachment (IDA) for a semester to various organizations. The IDA will enable students to apply knowledge and skills gained in the classroom during their job execution. Subsequently, it will render experiences to students to understand the nature of Bhutanese industries.

Learning Outcomes of the Programme
On completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Interpret correctly the written and oral instructions of a professional civil engineer.
  2. Supervise the work of all personnel for whom the diploma civil engineer is responsible.
  3. Identify and explain the causes of various defects in Civil Engineering related works and propose suitable measures to rectify them.
  4. Prepare preliminary plans and designs, technical drawings, and detailed cost estimates of civil engineering works.
  5. Conduct, analyze and interpret material tests using appropriate equipment for all Civil engineering works.
  6. Perform survey of civil engineering structures using appropriate equipment.
  7. Apply basic design codes and use Civil Engineering related software.
  8. Integrate traditional Bhutanese architectural features in the construction.
  9. Evaluate project progress and quality, and propose risk response plans.
  10. Develop Site-based resource plans including fund requirement forecast.
  11. Draw and interpret structural detailing for civil engineering structures.
  12. Plan and implement work and resource of construction projects.
  13. Prepare tender documents and initiate tendering in line with Procurement Rules and Regulations (PRR).
  14. Take measurement of work and prepare bills.
  15. Communicate proficiently both in English and Dzongkha and prepare written technical reports.
  1. Develop skills in applying theoretical concepts to real-world work scenarios and offer opportunities to gain the know-how necessary to address workplace difficulties through Industrial Attachment.
  2. Proficiently showcase communication, cooperation and leadership skills, and make valuable contributions to harmonious teamwork within practical fieldwork settings.

 

Curriculum Highlights
The curriculum of the Diploma in Civil Engineering consists of the following main components:

  1. Contents having building, road, water resources and soil properties.

  3. Project Management courses.
  4. Applied skills in plumbing, masonry, carpentry, estimation and construction software.

The student will also be facilitated with field visits and an industrial attachment programme to gain hands-on experience and to understand the function of a potential employing organization. Aims of the Programme
The primary objective of the Diploma programme in Electrical Engineering is to cultivate a substantial pool of capable and qualified technicians in the field of Electrical Engineering. These technicians will play a crucial role in supporting the government’s plans and policies aimed at developing power and energy infrastructure, while ensuring sustainable operation and maintenance of these systems. By addressing the needs of both the national and international students, the programme aims to attract a diverse range of individuals by offering a broad-based curriculum and preparing graduates for technical and supervisory roles in diverse sectors related to power and energy.

The Diploma in Electrical Engineering programme takes account of specific requirements of the society, major user agencies, and the emerging industries. Its overarching goal is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Electrical Engineering principles and practices. Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be equipped to fulfill the technical and supervisory demands of various sectors, including power stations, transmission and distribution systems, power projects, and manufacturing and construction industries. They will serve as valuable personnel responsible for the operation and maintenance of these vital facilities.

Learning Outcomes of the Programme

 On completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in analysing electrical circuits and applying relevant laws and principles to solve complex problems.
  2. Utilize specialized software and tools to design, simulate, and optimize electrical systems and components.

Curriculum Highlights

The diploma programme in Electrical Engineering offers a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, rendering graduates highly desirable to employers in both the private and public sectors. The programme’s emphasis on hands-on experience equips graduates with the necessary competencies to succeed in their chosen career paths. They are well-prepared to fulfil roles that demand technical expertise and practical application in electrical engineering.

The programme consists of borrowed modules (university-wide modules and general modules) and core modules. It also comprises university-wide and general modules which are offered mainly to enhance and develop soft skills as well as fundamentals skills. Seventy percent of the programme consists of core modules related to Electrical Engineering particularly on Power System and Industrial drives related modules.

In the first year, the programme offers foundational and practical oriented modules. The complementary modules in the first year include DZG102 བཟོ་རིག་འཛིན་སྐྱོང་ཤེས་བྱ and MAT101 Engineering Mathematics. The complexity and depth increase as the student progresses to the next semester. In the year 2 semester I, an elective is offered to make students decide on different soft skills modules, applied engineering Modules or core engineering modules based on their interest. However, at least 30 % of students should have chosen a particular elective module to be able to be offered during a particular semester.

Aims of the programme
The main aim of the programme is to provide hands-on, real-world, application-oriented learning for the development of mid-level mechanical engineering technicians who can develop simple mechanical components and devices along with technical drawings and estimates, manufacture simple mechanical component and devices, and perform maintenance on machine tools and automobiles. With these competencies, they will be able to supervise the performance of craftsmen working under them under the direction of higher-level engineer or middle manager.

Learning Outcomes of the Programme    

On completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. interpret the written and oral instructions from a professional engineer correctly.
  2. supervise mechanical engineering related works carried out by craftsmen under them.
  3. develop simple mechanical components, prepare technical drawings, estimates and requisitions for mechanical engineering related works.
  4. interpret mechanical engineering drawings and technical specifications correctly for execution of works.
  5. perform machining operations on conventional machine tools, welding and sheet metal works.
  6. prepare tender specifications and carry out evaluations of tender documents for mechanical engineering related items.
  7. prepare simple demand forecasts and production schedules.
  8. carry out maintenance of vehicles and machine tools.
  9. Implement occupational health and safety standards.
  10. Develop collaboration and team building skills
  11. communicate effectively, both in writing and verbal forms, any work-related instructions to subordinates and reports to supervisor.

Curriculum Highlights
The focus of the curriculum is on the development of knowledge and skills relevant to professional engineering practice and along with a sound theoretical base, including practical problem solving, team work and project development skills.
The curriculum is designed to provide knowledge and skills on manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical components and moving systems.

Aims of the programme
The Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering aims to provide broad based knowledge and skills in the field of electronics and communication engineering. The programme is designed with special emphasis on hands-on skill development, software skills and knowledge in modern electronics, communication and instrumentation technologies and their applications to keep abreast of latest technological trends. 

The programme will equip graduates with technical competence required of engineers at supervisory and technician levels to meet the demands of communications and electronics industry. They can fit in telecommunication and networking industries, process industry, automated systems in control and operations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Apply mathematics to develop logical and analytical techniques/skills to solve problems.
  2. Troubleshoot various faults in communication lines, instrumentation and control systems.
  3. Design circuits and PCBs using hardware electronic components and relevant software.

1.2.     Aims and Learning Outcomes of the Programme

1.2.1. Aims of the Programme

The programme aims to create a work force of capable surveyor by providing knowledge and skills in surveying including exposure to modern trends and development in the field. Students will be trained in surveying, land surveying, mapping, remote sensing, GIS and GNSS. The knowledge gained in this programme will enable collections of reliable data relevant to the needs of modern industries such as planning, utility management, disaster management and conservation and resources management.

The programme will focus on the practice of professional surveying by developing problem solving and analytical skills in the field of surveying. The graduates of the programme are expected to use state of the art systems for surveying, specialized computer software, and advanced equipment and technologies, such as levels, total stations, GIS, GNSS and remote sensing. 

1.2.2. Learning Outcomes of the Programme

On successful completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Interpret the written and oral instructions of a Professional Surveyor.
  2. Conduct different types of surveys using relevant instruments.
  3. Test surveying instruments to ascertain if they are in good working condition.
  4. Compute surveying data with necessary adjustments.
  5. Prepare maps using cartographic concepts and techniques
  6. Prepare maps with proper geodesic considerations
  7. Identify and establish permanent survey stations and bench marks to specifications.
  8. Conduct surveys in conformation with national legislations
  9. Produce maps from digital images
  10. Communicate proficiently in English and Dzongkha and prepare written technical reports.

1.3.     Career related opportunities

The work of surveying professionals involves land surveying, geographic information system (GIS) analysis, use of remote sensing and natural resources management. Therefore, possible career opportunities for graduates of the programme could be in diverse fields that requires the data collection for planning and development in organization such as National Land Commission and other private organizations.  More specifically, graduates could become assistant surveyor and survey associate.

The graduates will be able to find such job opportunities within the country, at regional and international job market where surveying techniques and technology is in rapid development with application in multidisciplinary areas.

Close to 20% of the programme caters to the coverage of general subject areas such as mathematics required for the development of analytical reasoning and deeper analysis of surveying problems, while another 14% caters to the development of basic knowledge and skills of surveying. 52% of the modules covers core surveying modules and remaining 14% covers legal aspects and management in surveying.

Year I offer foundational modules required for the study of the programme and computation of surveying modules for the collection of data. Year II offer modules that is built upon foundational modules with specific surveying techniques, remote sensing and photogrammetric processing, GIS and GNSS for the collection, storing and management of surveying data. Complementary modules such as IT and office productivity tools, land management and administration and principles of management were offer to supplement the study of core modules.

Students have to complete minimum of 60 credit modules each semester which amounts to minimum of 120 credits in a year and 240 credits to complete the programme in 2 years.

The student will be facilitated with industrial visits to gain hands-on experience and to understand the function of potential employing organization. Student will be sent for survey camp in relevant organization during final year within the country for the period of 6 weeks to gain practical

Aims of the Programme
The Diploma in Computer System and Network aims to provide the technical skills and expertise in the areas of system design and development, system administration, and network administration. The programme is designed to equip students with an integrated set of skills that will allow to develop their professional careers in the field of Computer System and Network. This programme will provide knowledge in computer system, server administration, network design, system development, and securing ICT resources. The programme is designed with a proper balance of theory with practical, so that students will gain sufficient hands-on skills and experience. The mini-project and project work of the programme will enable the students to gain hands-on skills and competencies required in real-life situations in the field of system design and development, system administration, and network administration.

The programme is also designed to equip students with the required knowledge and practical skills for installing, configuring and administering network services; provide technical skills and expertise in troubleshooting and maintaining server, network and personal computers; give exposure to basics of system analysis, design and web technology and explain and apply appropriate information technologies and employ appropriate methodologies to help an individual or organization achieve its goals and objectives.

Note: NTW101, NTW102 and NTW204 are the modules that meet the requirements of CCNA1, CCNA2 and CCNA3 respectively.  All the contents in these modules are derived from the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) modules.

The LPC101 Language for Professional Communication will be offered during the first year of first semester as the non-credited module. The students need to attend the class to complete all the assessments reflected in the module descriptor.

Aims of the Programme
The main aim of the programme is to produce technically competent professionals who can assist managers and take decisions, considering its strategic, operational, and tactical aspects in relation to the growth in modern technology in the field of supply chain management.

Learning Outcomes of the Programme    
On completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. state the concept of basic accounting and financial principles in supply chain management
  2. identify and create technical specification of materials
  3. examine the importance of the design and redesign of a supply chain as key components of an organization’s strategic plan

Career Related Opportunities
Graduates of this programme are expected to exhibit their knowledge and skills in the field of store management, materials management, logistics, warehouse, purchase management and actively involve in the overall process of procurement. Further, graduates also possess managerial skills, entrepreneurial skills, decision making and critical thinking in assuring quality services in an organization. 

Currently, most of the graduates get employed in corporate and private sectors, including the DHI companies and State Owned Enterprises. It is found that over 80% of graduates are employed within a year of graduation. Recruitment of few graduates right after graduation and numerous vacancy announcement made in various sectors indicate the good career prospects for the DMPM graduates.

In the second year, core modules of the programme such as procurement rules and regulations, negotiation skills, logistics, warehouse management and project-based modules are offered.

Project work is another module that expects students to undertake research/case study/product-based project for a period of one semester in their fourth semester. The project coordinator organizes project proposal presentation of students in the department where students, either in groups or individual, seeks recommendation and feedback on the chosen area of project topic relevant to the programme. Accordingly, a guide for student project is appointed to monitor the overall progress of the project during the semester. Based on the proposed topics, students are engaged in fulfilling the projected task under constant guidance of the guide. The work is assessed as per the framed marking criteria. The best topic is chosen for presentation during the inter-programme conference held in the college and published in the college journal.

Students have to complete a minimum of 60 credit modules each semester, which amounts to a minimum of 120 credits a year and 240 credits to complete the programme in 2 years.

Aims of the programme
The programme aims to develop a professional workforce in the construction sector as site supervisors to ensure quality, monitoring, cost-effectiveness and timely completion of any construction projects. The programme aspires to blend the engineering profession and supervision skills and responsibilities into a wholesome curriculum for the development of competent supervisors to shoulder roles within the construction sector and impart a skill-based education via workshop practices, field visits, and industrial attachment.

The Diploma in Construction supervision is distinct from civil engineering programme as it focuses more on the site monitoring, site management and supervisory aspect of the construction project, while the civil engineering programme focuses on the design principles and technical aspects of infrastructure design and construction.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. supervise construction works associated with infrastructure development
  2. monitor and report on resources at construction sites
  3. interpret contractual documents and running account bills
  4. identify the most suitable tools and their correct use for jobs on construction sites
  5. implement compliance of construction works to specifications and workmanship to ensure quality
  6. read and interpret construction drawings
  7. assist engineers in measurements, surveying and layout on construction sites
  8. enforce occupational health and safety at construction sites
  9. perform estimation and costing for construction works
  10. plan and track work and resources of construction works
  11. ensure implementation of environmental management plans at the construction sites
  12. prepare inventory documents to provide information on the availability of stocked items and the status of stocked requisitions
  13. exhibit a capacity for critical reasoning and independent learning
  14. utilize effective verbal communication skills in meetings, presentations, and site visits to convey technical information to stakeholders
  15. demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in response to changes in project scope, timelines, and resources
